Is ChatGPT Safe for Flight Training?

The hidden dangers of AI in the cockpit of learning — with the actual hallucination rates, a real AOPA case study, and a Monday-morning playbook for CFIs and flight schools.

The 30-Second Version

  • It hallucinates 10–20% of the time on domain-specific questions. Aviation regulations, airspace, and aircraft specs sit squarely inside that range (Stanford HAI, Vectara).
  • The danger is not wrong answers. It is confident wrong answers. AOPA flew a ChatGPT-planned cross-country and ended up routed through restricted airspace with a NAV frequency listed as the CTAF.
  • AI done right accelerates learning. A 2025 meta-analysis of AI-assisted instruction shows a large positive effect size (0.924). The key word is grounded.
  • Do not ban it. Govern it. Five ground rules, one free tool (NotebookLM with the PHAK), and a short Monday-morning playbook below.

At the Sun ‘n Fun 2026 Forum this week in Lakeland, Florida, I asked a room of CFIs and flight-school operators a simple question: Do your students use AI to study for their written test?

13% said yes. Half said probably, but they had never asked. 38% had no idea. Not one said “no.” Then I asked whether they would trust ChatGPT to teach a student about airspace. Zero said absolutely not. 75% said “only as a supplement.”

Those two polls, together, are the entire problem. Students are using AI. CFIs know it is not trustworthy as a teacher. And very few flight schools have a plan for the gap between those two facts. What follows is the plan I gave the Sun ‘n Fun room — written down so you can share it with your instructors, your students, and anyone who still thinks this is a problem for next year.

Part 1 — The Reality

Are Your Students Actually Using ChatGPT for Flight Training?

Yes. Assume every student under 30 has already asked ChatGPT an aviation question this week.

The data is not ambiguous. A 2025 BestColleges survey found 88% of U.S. college students now use AI tools to complete coursework, up from 53% the year before. Pew Research reported in January 2025 that the share of teens using ChatGPT for schoolwork doubled from 13% to 26% in a single year, and that 79% of teens are now aware of the tool. Among teens who use it, 54% say it is acceptable for researching new topics.

Student pilots are not outliers on this curve. They are on it. And aviation has a particular profile of questions that makes AI both extremely tempting and unusually risky to rely on.

Part 2 — The Danger

How Often Does ChatGPT Hallucinate on Aviation Questions?

Aviation sits in the 10–20% error range for domain-specific questions. The bigger problem is that the wrong answers arrive with total confidence.

“Hallucination” is the AI-research term for a model confidently stating something that is factually wrong. Rates vary dramatically by task. The four tiers below come from Stanford HAI's 2024–2025 hallucination studies, the Vectara Hallucination Leaderboard, and a 2024 JMIR analysis of legal citation accuracy.

When ChatGPT Can't Even Tell Time

In March 2026, a runner on social media (@HuskIRL) posted a video that hit 50+ million views. He asked ChatGPT to time his mile run. He stopped after about five seconds and asked for his time. ChatGPT replied, with no hedging, “You clocked in at around 10 minutes and 12 seconds.” When he pushed back, it doubled down. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, confronted on live TV, called it a “known issue” and said it would take “another year” to fix.

Change the prompt from “time my mile” to “what is the airspace above my home airport” and the failure mode is identical. The tool does not know when it does not know.

The AOPA Case Study: “When Smart Gets Stupid”

In July 2025, AOPA's You Can Fly team published a deep look at ChatGPT for flight planning. They asked the model to plan a VFR cross-country from Frederick, Maryland (KFDK) to Buckeye, Arizona (KBXK). The results are exactly what every CFI needs their students to see.

Four Aviation Questions ChatGPT Routinely Gets Wrong

"What class of airspace is above KXYZ airport?"
Misses Class D cores under Class B shelves, MOAs, or airports near restricted areas.
"What's the useful load of a Cessna 172?"
Confuses 172S and 172R variants — different fuel capacities and useful loads — without flagging the difference.
"What are VFR weather minimums?"
May give correct Class E minimums but miss the different requirements for Class B, C, D, or G airspace.
"Cite the regulation for passenger currency."
May fabricate a regulation number entirely, or cite a repealed FAR.

The Real Danger Is Not Wrong Answers. It Is Confident Wrong Answers.

A textbook can be wrong. A textbook does not tell you it is sure. ChatGPT does not say “I am not certain about this airspace.” It says, “The airspace above XYZ airport is Class E” — even when it is Class D with a Class B shelf overhead. Students do not question confident answers. They absorb them. They repeat them on the oral. They plan flights based on them.

Live Test — April 2026

I asked ChatGPT directly: “Plan a VFR cross-country from KLAL to KTPF.” That is Lakeland Linder to Peter O. Knight, both in central Florida.

  • • KLAL sits inside the Tampa Mode C veil (30 NM Class B ring).
  • • The direct route crosses Tampa Class B approach corridors.
  • • KTPF is surrounded by military training airspace.
  • • A competent CFI would say: “Let's talk about this route carefully.”

This is called AI sycophancy — models are trained to be helpful and agreeable, and in aviation “helpful” can mean praising a flight plan that should have triggered a safety discussion. Anthropic and OpenAI have both published on the problem (2024–2025).

From “Children of the Magenta Line” to “Children of the Chatbot”

The aviation community has lived through this exact pattern before. When GPS moving maps arrived in the cockpit, a generation of pilots gradually lost pilotage and dead-reckoning skills. We called them the children of the magenta line. The skills decay was not obvious until the moving map quit — and then it was. It took roughly fifteen years to see it clearly and start building the habit back into training.

Part 3 — The Opportunity

When AI Is Grounded, It Actually Works

A 2025 meta-analysis of AI-assisted learning shows a large positive effect size (0.924). Grounded and purpose-built tools beat raw ChatGPT by wide margins.

The same research base that warns about hallucinations is clear about the upside. A 2025 ScienceDirect meta-analysis of AI in education reports a “significant positive effect” on student outcomes with an effect size of 0.924 — in educational research, anything above 0.8 is considered large. Adaptive AI systems come in around 0.70 (medium-large). Students get personalized pacing, 24/7 availability, and instant corrective feedback. Those are exactly the things a solo CFI cannot deliver at 11pm the night before a written test.

The question is not whether AI helps learning. It does. The question is which AI you point your students at before they find ChatGPT on their own.

A Free, Safer Starting Point: Google NotebookLM + the PHAK

If your students are going to use AI — and they are — the cheapest upgrade you can make today is to point them at Google NotebookLM instead of raw ChatGPT. It's free with a Google account. The U.S. Air Force Is Already Here

The Air Force is building an AI chatbot called IP GPT to coach student pilots in simulators — freeing up human instructor pilots for higher-value training. In 2025, the Air Force Test Pilot School partnered with the MIT AI Accelerator for intensive AI/ML workshops with pilots from platforms including the F-35, B-52, and MQ-9 Reaper. If the Air Force trusts guardrailed AI to help train fighter pilots, private aviation can use it too — with the right tools.

The Real Question for Every Flight School

The question is not “Should my students use AI?” They already are. The question is, “Which AI am I going to point them at before they find ChatGPT on their own?” That is a choice you can make this week. Students who quit flight training rarely do it because a single lesson went badly. They quit because the aggregate cost, time, and confusion outpaces their progress. Pointing them at a grounded study tool — and teaching them when not to trust it — is one of the cheapest retention moves available.

Can I use ChatGPT to study for the FAA private pilot written test?

Yes, carefully. ChatGPT is reasonable at explaining concepts like P-factor, the four forces of flight, or why a carbureted engine needs carb heat. It is unreliable for exact regulation citations, airspace questions tied to specific airports, and aircraft-variant specs. Use it to explain ideas, then verify every fact against the PHAK, AIM, and FAR before you commit it to memory.

Does ChatGPT give the correct answer about airspace?

Not reliably. It frequently misses Class D cores under a Class B shelf, conflates Mode C veils with airspace boundaries, and flattens the differences between B, C, D, E, and G in VFR weather minimums. Stanford HAI and the Vectara Hallucination Leaderboard show 10–20% error rates on domain-specific questions — airspace is one of those domains.

Is it safe to use ChatGPT to plan a flight?

No. AOPA documented a ChatGPT cross-country plan that routed an experienced pilot straight through restricted airspace in southern New Mexico and listed a navigation frequency as a CTAF. Fuel math and leg distances were close. The safety-critical details were wrong. If you use AI in planning at all, treat every frequency, airspace boundary, and NOTAM as a hypothesis to be verified against official sources.

Are there safer AI tools for student pilots than ChatGPT?

Yes. Source-grounded tools like Google NotebookLM let you upload the PHAK, AIM, or ACS and ask questions against those documents — the answers stay inside the material you gave it. Does leaning on AI weaken real pilot skills?

What should a flight school's AI policy look like?

Start with acknowledgement, not prohibition. Tell your students: "I know you will use AI to study. Here is what it gets wrong in aviation, and here is how to use it safely." Publish five ground rules: never flight-plan on AI without verification, always cross-check regulations against the FAR/AIM, use AI for concepts and practice questions, prefer source-grounded tools like NotebookLM with the PHAK, and tell your CFI when AI taught you something so they can verify it.
