Glossary/Magnetic Deviation
Definition

Magnetic Deviation

The error in a magnetic compass caused by local magnetic fields in the airplane itself, such as electrical wiring, engines, and avionics. Each aircraft has a compass correction card near the compass that shows the deviation on various headings. To get an accurate magnetic heading, the pilot applies the deviation correction for the compass heading being flown.
