Glossary/Magnetic Variation (Declination)
Definition

Magnetic Variation (Declination)

The angular difference between true north and magnetic north at a given location on the Earth. Variation changes depending on where you are and is shown on sectional charts as isogonic lines. Pilots use variation to convert between true course (measured on the chart) and magnetic course (what the compass reads). The mnemonic "East is least, West is best" helps remember whether to add or subtract.
